Fear is a powerful emotion that can either drive us closer to God or paralyze us into inaction. At Pioneer Church Memphis, we believe that fear doesn’t have to control your life. Instead, it can be a signal to trust God more deeply and to step into His abundant promises. Whether you're worried about your future, struggling with purpose, or feeling stuck, rest assured—God has already prepared the way for you. Let’s explore how to surrender our fears and live boldly in faith.

Fear Is Not a Sin, It’s a Signal

“Fear is not always sin—it’s a signal,” Pastor Jeremy reminded us during Sunday’s message. This means when fear arises, it’s an opportunity to examine what’s truly driving it. Is it insecurity? A lack of control? Unbelief? Fear, in its healthy form, was designed to bring us closer to God, not to pull us away from Him. Instead of suppressing or overreacting to fear, we can bring it to the Lord and ask, “Why am I scared of this, God? What do You want me to learn from this?”

The Enemy Speaks in Lack, But God Speaks in Abundance

The story of Adam and Eve in Genesis 3 reminds us how the enemy operates. While God speaks to us in abundance—“You can eat from any tree except one”—the enemy twists words and makes us feel like we’re lacking. He plants thoughts like, “You’re too old,” “You’re missing out,” or “You’ll never have enough.” But here’s the truth: abundance is your birthright in Christ Jesus. As Romans 8:31 says, “If God is for us, who can be against us?”

Unchecked Fear Leads to Poor Decisions

Unchecked fear distorts reality and leads us to make irrational decisions. It tells us we don’t have enough, haven’t done enough, or aren’t enough. Whether it’s holding onto unnecessary possessions out of fear, staying in toxic relationships to avoid loneliness, or hoarding resources because of anxiety about the future, fear tricks us into thinking we must fight for what God has already promised to provide.

“A rushed bird never builds a good nest,” Pastor Jeremy wisely shared. When we operate out of fear, we rush, strive, and manipulate, only to find ourselves exhausted and no better off. Instead, we’re called to rest in God’s provision and trust His timing. As Jesus said in Matthew 6:25-27, “Do not worry about your life… Can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”

Faith Over Fear: Trusting God Despite Uncertainty

Faith isn’t the absence of fear; it’s the ability to trust God in spite of it. Noah built the ark without knowing how it would all turn out. Gideon went into battle with just 300 men, trusting God to deliver victory. Sometimes, God calls us to take a step of faith even when we’re scared. And here’s the good news: God has already created margin in your life for your mistakes. If you step out and miss the mark, He’s big enough to redirect you.

As 2 Timothy 1:7 reminds us, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.” When fear tries to creep in, remember that it’s not from God. Instead, choose to walk in the spirit of power and confidence that He’s placed in you.

Practical Steps to Overcome Fear and Worry

  • Pray and Present Your Fears to God: Philippians 4:6-7 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Pour your worries out to Him and let His peace guard your heart.

  • Change Your Mindset: Instead of thinking “What if it goes wrong?” start declaring “What if God shows up?” Shift your focus from fear to faith.

  • Take Small Steps of Obedience: Whether it’s starting a new business, pursuing a relationship, or serving in your community, trust that God will guide each step you take.

  • Surround Yourself with Community: Sometimes, all it takes is a simple invite to get someone connected. As Pastor Jeremy shared, “80% of people would come to church if someone just invited them.” Be that invitation for someone else!

  • Remember God’s Promises: Meditate on scriptures that remind you of God’s faithfulness, such as Romans 8:32, “He who did not spare His own Son… how will He not also graciously give us all things?”

Conclusion: Fear Doesn’t Get the Final Say

Fear may be loud, but it doesn’t get the final say in your life. God is calling you to trust Him, even in uncertainty, and to step into His abundant promises. As Pastor Jeremy declared, “God doesn’t want you to live in fear of lack. Everything you need is in Christ Jesus.”

So, what’s the fear that’s been holding you back? Take it to God today. Trust Him to unstick you from paralysis and move you toward the purpose He’s already prepared for you. At Pioneer Church Memphis, we’re here to walk this journey with you. Come join us for worship, community, and a deeper relationship with Jesus. Together, let’s live boldly for His glory.
