Have you ever wondered what it truly means to fan the spiritual flame within you? That small spark of divine gifting placed in your heart is waiting to burn brighter, but tending to it requires intention and balance. This week, we’re diving into how to nurture the gifts God has given us, ensuring that they grow and ignite our lives and communities with purpose and power. Let’s explore what it means to fan into flame the gift of the Holy Spirit and how prayer becomes the oxygen fueling our spiritual fire.

The Key to Fanning Your Flame

Sometimes, we think the flame of our spiritual gift dwindles because we aren’t doing enough. But the truth is, the fire goes out when we stop giving it oxygen. As Pastor Jeremy profoundly shared, “Your job is just showing up with the fan. The Spirit's there. The air is there. You just have to move it in the direction of the gift He gave you.”

In this analogy, the fan represents our intentional acts of praise, worship, Scripture reading, and staying in tune with the rhythms of the Holy Spirit. It’s not about fanning too hard and burning out or barely fanning at all and letting the flame die. It’s about finding the “pace of grace” that allows the fire of the Holy Spirit to grow steadily, illuminating the path He’s called us to walk.

Learning the Language of Heaven

As Pastor Jeremy asked, “What is the first thing you do when you enter a new culture or environment? You learn the language.” In the same way, to truly connect with God and understand His will, we must learn the language of heaven—prayer. Prayer is our direct communication with the Creator, and through it, we align ourselves with His purpose.

Yet, many of us struggle because we haven’t embraced the diverse expressions of prayer. Pastor Jeremy pointed out, “Prayer is not a one-size-fits-all practice.” From intercessory prayers to contemplative silence, prayer takes many forms, each as vital and powerful as the other. By immersing ourselves in these expressions, we can transform our prayer lives and deepen our relationship with God.

Why Words Matter: Speaking Life Over Yourself

Language doesn’t just shape how we communicate with others—it profoundly affects how we see ourselves. “The way you speak about yourself is very important,” Pastor Jeremy reminded us. Many of us unknowingly adopt negative self-talk, echoing lies that the enemy is all too happy to cosign.

But God’s language is one of truth and affirmation. He says, “You are fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14). Changing the way you speak to yourself—aligning it with the language of heaven—can break chains of self-doubt and lead to a life anchored in God’s promises. Imagine looking at challenges and declaring, “I lack nothing because all that I need is in Christ Jesus.”

Prayer as a Spiritual Toolbox

Pastor Jeremy outlined several powerful types of prayer that can enrich our spiritual journey. Here’s a quick overview:

  • Intercessory Prayer: Standing in the gap for others is an act of love and obedience. Someone’s prayers brought you to where you are today—now it’s your turn to intercede!

  • Corporate Prayer: There’s strength in numbers. When believers gather in unity, their collective prayers create a multiplied power that God moves through.

  • Contemplative Prayer: Be still and silent in God’s presence. Sometimes, we talk too much in prayer and miss His voice in the quiet moments.

  • Deliverance Prayer: Spiritual warfare is real, and God equips us with His power to cast out darkness. But remember, deliverance often requires prayer, fasting, and discipleship.

  • Worship-Based Prayer: Turn your prayers into songs and your worship into prayers. Like Paul and Silas in prison, worship can break chains and open doors.

  • Prophetic Prayer: Speak God’s will and Word over your life and situations. Prophetic prayers must align with His Word, character, and promises.

Stepping Into Your Purpose

Throughout the message, a resounding truth emerged: your spiritual gifts are not just for you. “Fan into flame the gift of the Holy Spirit,” the speaker emphasized, “but understand that flame is not to keep you warm; it’s to warm the community.” Your gifts are meant to bring light, hope, and transformation to those around you.

Take a moment to reflect: Are you fanning the flame of your spiritual gift with intention? Have you learned the language of heaven through prayer and worship? Are you using your gifts to serve others and glorify God?
