Have you ever paused to consider the birds of the air and the hidden wisdom they carry? Pastor Cody's recent sermon, "Birdwatch," sheds light on how these feathered creatures, with their invisible capabilities, mirror the unseen spiritual truths that guide our faith. From navigating magnetic fields to singing songs in the darkness, birds provide powerful metaphors for how we can live in faith, trust, and reliance on God. Join us as we unpack these profound lessons and explore how moving from darkness to light and focusing on the unseen can transform our lives.
The Amazing Abilities of Birds: Trusting the Unseen
Pastor Cody introduced us to several fascinating birds and their extraordinary abilities:
Eurasian Reed Warbler & European Robin: These birds use the earth’s magnetic field as a GPS to navigate long distances.
Golden-Winged Warbler: Native to Tennessee, this bird can detect infrasound, sensing dangerous weather long before it arrives.
Cardinal: Cardinals use light-sensitive proteins in their eyes to identify territorial boundaries, respecting each other’s space.
Northern Parula: Equipped with UV vision, this bird sees hidden insects that others can’t detect.
Homing Pigeon: Known for their incredible sense of smell, these pigeons can find their way home from over a thousand miles away.
The common theme? These birds rely on the unseen—magnetic fields, infrasound, UV vision, and more—to live and thrive. Similarly, we are called to depend on the invisible works of God. As Pastor Cody beautifully put it, "We are very similar in our makeup, spiritually: moving from darkness to light, and if we're doing it right, depending on the invisible."
From Darkness to Light: A Spiritual Journey
Drawing from scripture, Pastor Cody highlighted the process of moving from spiritual darkness into God’s light. In 2 Corinthians 4:3-4, Paul explains that the “god of this world,” Satan, blinds people to the glorious light of the Good News. Often, this darkness is not just ignorance—it’s allegiance to the wrong master. Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6:23, "If the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!"
Pastor Cody emphasized that true transformation begins when we seek God and His Kingdom above all else (Matthew 6:33). The journey from darkness to light is not always easy—it requires surrender, trust, and a willingness to let God shine His light into every corner of our lives, even the hidden, uncomfortable places.
Singing in the Darkness: The American Robin 🐦
One of the most inspiring examples shared was the American Robin. Unlike other birds, the robin sings its song before the sun rises. It doesn’t wait for the light to appear—it trusts that it’s coming. This is a profound lesson for us: can we praise and trust God while still in the darkness? Can we sing our song of faith even when the promise hasn’t been fulfilled yet?
Pastor Cody encouraged us to examine our hearts: “Where are you living? Are you living in darkness, or are you living in the light? And what are you depending on?” Just as the robin trusts the dawn will come, we should trust in God's promises and timing, even when the path ahead seems uncertain.
Focusing on the Unseen
Life’s challenges can feel overwhelming, but scripture reminds us to fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 4:18, "For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever." Pastor Cody urged us to shift our focus to the eternal treasures in heaven, storing up our faith and trust in God rather than relying on material or temporary comforts.
Practical steps to focus on the unseen include:
Prayer: Redirect your worries into prayers, trusting God with your struggles while interceding for others.
Faith: Trust that God’s promises will come to pass, even when circumstances seem to suggest otherwise.
Perspective: View life’s challenges as opportunities for God to reveal His glory and power through you.
Light vs. Darkness: Letting God Take Over
One of the most powerful points of the sermon was this: “Light doesn’t negotiate with darkness; it just takes over.” When we allow God’s light into our lives, it eradicates the darkness. But we must let it in—fully, not just in the areas we are comfortable surrendering. True freedom comes when we let go of our fears, worries, and control, trusting God to lead us into His light.
Pastor Cody shared a personal story of waiting for medical test results, highlighting how the "test is the time between the tests." It’s in these moments of uncertainty that our faith is refined, and we learn to depend entirely on God’s unseen hand at work.
Final Thoughts: Sing Your Song of Faith
From the magnetic navigation of the Eurasian Reed Warbler to the morning song of the American Robin, nature reflects the spiritual truths that guide us. Like these birds, we are called to navigate life by faith, trusting in what we cannot see. As Pastor Cody reminded us, “If God did it before, what makes you think He won’t do it again?”
So, where are you today? Are you living in darkness or walking in the light? Are you clinging to fears and worries, or are you trusting in the invisible promises of God? Let’s take inspiration from the birds and live by faith, not by sight. Let’s sing our song of faith, even in the darkest moments, trusting that the light is coming.
