What defines a man in today’s world? Is it success, strength, or societal expectations? Or is it something deeper, something eternal? At Pioneer Church Memphis, we explored this question through a transformative message titled "Who Makes the Man?" This powerful sermon dove into the heart of biblical manhood, challenging men and women alike to rise above cultural standards and embrace their God-given identity.
The War We’re Fighting: Culture vs. Kingdom
Pastor Jeremy reminded us that while there’s a visible war raging overseas, there’s also a spiritual war happening closer to home—a battle between kingdom truth and cultural lies. He declared, "The culture is trying to redefine what God has already established since the beginning of time. But men, we are the catalyst. We must rise up, take our mantle in Christ, and lead." He called for men and women to stand firm, united against the cultural agenda of mediocrity and confusion.
Unwavering vs. Unyielding: Two Roads, Two Destinies
The sermon highlighted two types of men: the unwavering man and the unyielding man. Here’s how they differ:
The Unwavering Man: Yields daily to the Holy Spirit, stands firm on biblical truth, and leads with compassion and conviction. He "offers love without surrendering righteousness" and sets the pace for his family and community.
The Unyielding Man: Lives according to the flesh, guided by feelings, pride, and cultural opinion. He is unstable, undisciplined, and resistant to godly correction.
Pastor Jeremy challenged men to shift from unyielding to unwavering, stating, "It’s time to become men who don’t just look the part but live the part. Be men of character and fruit."
Five Key Areas Where Identity Matters
The message unpacked five key areas where the unwavering man and unyielding man differ:
Identity: The unwavering man knows he is made in the image of God, while the unyielding man lets culture define him.
Authority: Unwavering men submit to God’s authority and lead with humility, whereas unyielding men demand control and use manipulation.
Emotions: The unwavering man expresses emotions in a Christlike way, while the unyielding man suppresses emotions or vents them destructively.
Conflict: Unwavering men pursue peace without compromising truth. Unyielding men resort to aggression or harbor silent bitterness.
Purity: The unwavering man honors God with his body, resisting sexual immorality. The unyielding man compromises and trades eternal purpose for temporary pleasure.
"You were bought with a price," Pastor Jeremy reminded us. "Your body isn’t cheap. It’s worship every time you say no to temptation and yes to holiness."
Breaking Generational Curses
The message also emphasized the importance of breaking generational curses, particularly those tied to fatherlessness. "Some of us are bitter with our fathers because they didn’t meet our expectations. But today, you can change the course of history. Be the kingdom man or woman that alters the trajectory for future generations."
Forgiveness was highlighted as a key step. "Forgiveness is for you," Pastor Jeremy said. "It doesn’t mean you trust again immediately, but it means you’re releasing the burden and stepping into the generational blessing God has for you."
Answering the Call
Ultimately, the call to action was clear: "Don’t wait to be a kingdom man. Start today. Draw the line in your household and declare, ‘As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.’" Women were encouraged to support and encourage the men in their lives to rise to this challenge.
Pastor Jeremy closed with a powerful reminder, "If the world can be aggressive about their message, how much more should we be aggressive about the gospel of Jesus? Let’s be unwavering men and women who stand firm in faith and set the standard for generations to come."
